Pollution pumped into the Murray from agistment paddocks on the eastern side of Sturt Reserve at Murray Bridge.
Pump was reported to commence operation in the early hours of Friday 8th Dec 2006.
Residual sludge floated across the river assisted by a slight easterly breeze, to pollute the main public reserve and swimming area on a day expected to reach 40 º Celcius with anticipated maximum use of the river bank by swimmers.

Houseboats moored overnight unaware they were in polluted water. Consequent
impact to occupiers health could be servere.Which authority should have advised them.

Please explain the legal position of residents beautifying their riverfront properties by spreading sand.
Sand is a natural element of the river and occurs everywhere.
Photos of sand in the river are attached.

Thanks Mary, We will endeavour to clarify the situation   ED
Hi Ed,
Sand is being moved around along the length of the river. In your own backyard there is sand  lanscaping by residents and by local organizations. I dont think that it is illegal. Surely someone in authority can quote the regulations.

Thanks Tim,
As we understand the regulations, the dumping of sand along the riverbank is covered by the "RIVER MURRAY ACT 2003",
Item 2, Part 7, Sec.(4).(d)."The impact of pollutants such as sediments.....on the environs constituted by the River Murray System is to be minimised".      Ed

THIS IS TYPICAL OF THE RIVER BANK. THE LOW RIVER LEVEL CONTINUES TO EXPOSE OUR EXCESSES.
THESE PARTICULAR TYRES WERE COLLECTED BY THE MURRAY BRIDGE COUNCIL (RCMB) FOR DISPOSAL.
IT IS PLEASING TO NOTE THAT PRIVATE LANDHOLDERS ARE ALSO TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE SITUATION.

HELP SAVE THE MURRAY FROM SAND
Help keep our waterways healthy.
The River Murray and Lower Lakes supports local communities, tourism, recreational fishing and boating, it provides habitats for fish, plant and animal life along with being a water supply for many South Australians. We are in danger of adding more challenges to its health e and survival.
Don't dump sand. Why?
Putting beach and other sand into these waterways for boat ramps, landscaping, small beaches or for water edge grasses
is polluting this vital system. This dumped sand isn't natural to the ecosystem and damages the natural state of the River Murray and Lower Lakes. Wind, waves and water traffic quickly moves the dumped sand from where it is placed and redistributes the sand through the river system. It then creates uncharted sand bars and alters berthing depths causing navigation and boating hazards. Sand can block irrigation channels and the main water supply intakes. It also affects the breeding sites for fish, worms and other river species that rely on natural, healthy riverbeds for their survival.
There is an alternative.
To continue to enjoy what the wonderful River Murray o and Lower Lakes can provide we must work together. If you,  or someone you know wants to create easier water access, we recommend the use of jetties, pontoons and approved beach building materials. For ideas, specific information and Development Approvals contact your local council.
Did you know it is illegal?
Putting sand into the River Murray and Lower Lakes is illegal and strong penalties apply.
"        Dumping sand into the river or on its riverbank, may incur fines up to $30,000.
"        Contractors and sand suppliers may also be fined.
"        Removal and site remediation may also be ordered. Removal.

THE RIVERBANK IN VICTORIA
PARKS VICTORIA USED TO SUPPLY SKIPS & GARBAGE BINS ALONG THE MURRAY, INCLUDING THE HOT SPOT BETWEEN ECHUCA AND TORRUMBARRY WEIR.
IT SEEMS THAT THEY DECIDED TO WITHDRAW COLLECTION FACILITIES IN FAVOUR OF AN UNREALISTIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME FOR CAMPERS TO TAKE THEIR RUBBISH WITH THEM .
THE RESULT IS THAT TRASH IS NOW DUMPED , LEAVING THEIR CAMPSITES OBSTENSIBLY CLEAR.
